Introduction to Matrix Methods in Optics — Worked Solutions
This collection accompanies A. Gerrard and J. M. Burch, Introduction to Matrix Methods in Optics (Wiley, 1975). It covers all 26 numbered illustrative problems in Chapters II–IV and the extended aperture problem in Appendix A. Chapters I and V are retained in the sequence even though they contain no numbered problem set.
The original prompts are not reproduced. Read the numbered problem in the book, then use the corresponding derivation here. The notation follows the book’s reduced ray vector \((y,V)^T=(y,nv)^T\); matrix chains act on the rightmost element first.
The Matrix-Optics Reference Tables page recreates the book’s four principal summary tables as accessible Sphinx tables. Its SVG diagrams are newly drawn for this documentation and emphasize composition order, stability, polarization flow, and aperture geometry.
