Integrated Optics — Detailed Worked Solutions

This collection accompanies Robert G. Hunsperger, Integrated Optics: Theory and Technology, sixth edition (Springer, 2009), DOI 10.1007/b98730. It covers the 208 numbered end-of-chapter problems in all 22 chapters of the supplied edition. Problem numbers refer to the book; tasks are summarized in our own words.

Read Notation, Models, and Checks before starting. Each solution explains the physical model, develops the necessary equations, substitutes the supplied data where appropriate, and checks or interprets the answer. Original diagrams show mode shapes, coupling, modulation, and device geometry. Illustrations are schematic unless numerical axes are supplied.

Some questions require a value read from a graph, omit a material constant, or use an approximation outside its range. Those limitations are stated at the affected problem. A symbolic or conditional answer identifies exactly which additional datum is needed. Apparent printing errors are distinguished from explicitly assumed corrections. Historical technology questions are answered in the context of the 2009 edition.

Numerical models and figures are maintained by docs/integrated_optics_calculations.py and docs/generate_integrated_optics_figures.py. They use SI constants and explicit conversions; planar-waveguide dimensions in their public functions are in micrometres. The book PDF is not needed to build these pages.
